There are over 60 species of Echium that grow across much of Europe, particularly the Mediterranean area, the Macaronesian islands, parts of Asia, and north Africa. The areas they are native to determine what conditions they require to grow well in the UK. Minimum temperatures are an important factor but keeping the plants on the dry side during the winter will also help them survive.
