Introducing...

Fittonia

Botanical name: Fittonia albivenis

Common name: Mosaic plant

These small yet striking houseplants are grown for their colourful leaves, patterned with prominent veins. They need high humidity, so are best kept in a bathroom or terrarium.

Looks

A low-growing plant with softly hairy, oval leaves that have colourful, contrasting veins, usually white or pink.

Likes

Humid air is essential. Fittonias also need a bright position out of direct sunlight, and regular watering. Keep them above 17°C (63°F) and out of cold draughts.

Dislikes

Although fittonias enjoy humidity, they don’t like waterlogged compost. Also keep them out of direct sun, to ensure the leaves don’t scorch.

Did you know?

As they are compact and slow growing, fittonias are perfect for a terrarium, where they’ll thrive in the moist, humid atmosphere. See our video guide to planting up a terrarium.
