Climbing honeysuckle
Botanical name: Lonicera
Deciduous or evergreen, climbing honeysuckles (Lonicera) have thin, flexible stems that twine around their supports. Grow them up walls and fences, or over a pergola to scent the air near a seating area.
Looks
Climbing honeysuckles have twining stems with green or variegated leaves. They have clusters of trumpet-like blooms, with colours ranging from creamy-white, through yellow to red, that are often sweetly scented in summer. The flowers are usually followed by clusters of glossy red berries, perfect for the birds.
Likes
Although they will flower better in a sunny place, a lightly shaded position will encourage a healthier, greener plant. Climbing honeysuckles will thrive on almost any soil type.
Dislikes
Very wet or excessively dry soils are unsuitable. Strong sunlight can scorch the growth.
Did you know?
Not all climbing honeysuckles are fragrant (Lonicera tellmaniana is an example of one that is not), so do check the label before you buy. The scented forms are exceptionally successful at attracting pollinators and will delight your senses.
