Lucy Mitchell
Lucy spent over 15 years as an architectural designer, creating installations and activations for some of the biggest brands in the world. In 2013 Lucy set up her own business Seven Sisters Create, where she started creating nature based installations.

It quickly became apparent that a career in garden and landscape design was a natural next step, and when lockdown provided the opportunity to retrain, Lucy signed up to study at Capel Manor, winning the Bali Chalk Fund Student of the Year 2023.
Lucy says: “As an architectural designer working for brands, I started creating event spaces with plants in 2013. They gave me so much joy, I realised this is the direction I wanted to go in. It took a global pandemic to give me the freedom to retrain. I feel like I am still developing my overall style, having only graduated in July 2023, but I am very inspired by the beauty of natural landscapes and juxtaposing the delicate forms against (minimally used) utilitarian hard landscaping.
“Being involved in the show for me is a chance to publicly announce my new career in garden & landscape design. It’s a wonderful chance to meet your peers and push yourself to the limits.”
Lucy’s tips to designing a container garden:
- Ensure the scale of the containers feels appropriate for the area, too small and they will feel like clutter, too big and they will overwhelm the space.
- Minimise the different types of materials and finishes.
- Choose your plants carefully, ensure they can cope with occasional drought and restricted root space.
