Michela says: “I hadn't explored the horticultural industry until in my 30s and I wasn’t aware of the creative diversity and scope that garden design brings. I fell upon it and I wish I could have delved in sooner, there is no looking back! I’m still developing my style, but I’m always trying to create new details in every design.
“Designing for 911±¬ÁÏ Chelsea, is a personal challenge without the constraints of a real client, so the scheme has allowed me to try out some details which I haven’t before. It’s also a space for learning and growing as a designer whilst collaborating and meeting others.”
Michela’s tips for designing a balcony
- Experiment to see what environment you truly have on your balcony. It may be that a plant which doesn’t fare so well in your garden is actually quite sheltered on your balcony for example.
- Utilise all the space, can you securely place a hanging basket so you can plant as much as possible without taking up as much floor space.
- Think about how your balcony looks from the inside as well as the outside.
