Bowel Research UK was founded in 2020 following a merger between two well-respected charities: Bowel & Cancer Research and Bowel Disease Research Foundation (BDRF).
Every year over 16,000 people die from bowel cancer in the UK and over a million suffer from bowel disease. By researching potential new cutting edge treatments and investing in the best science, the charity saves and improves people’s lives
The projects funded by Bowel Research UK demand pioneering science that is necessarily experimental. Its research is typically not funded by other charities or national research organisations. Without BRUK’s small ‘proof of principle’ grants and individual bursaries to PhD students, very few theoretical, lab-based bowel disease research projects would ever be undertaken.
Following their seed corn funding, successful projects apply to larger organisations and to the government for further grants once they have cleared the most difficult hurdle, proof of initial principle. Among the 63 projects already funded, many have the potential to produce new treatments or even cures for bowel diseases that currently blight the lives of hundreds of thousands of UK people.
