Celebrating the exciting and diverse new plants launched in 2022

Winner of the 911±¬ÁÏ Plant of the Year 2022

x Semponium 'Destiny'

Bred by Daniel Michael and exhibited by Surreal Succulents, x Semponium 'Destiny' is a cross between an Aeonium and Sempervivum. This selection has been bred to be hardy to -2 degrees C.

It has a rich and deep purple colour, intense in tone in summer and good in winter. It is unique in being drought tolerant. The plant exhibits vigorous growth, growing all year round, reaching maturity at 40 x 40cm in three years. The leaves have a veiny texture. A good architectural plant to add interest to the garden all year around.

Second and third place

Armeria pseudarmeria 'Dreamland' (Dreameria Series)

Bred by Plant Growers Australia, exhibited by Stonebarn Landscapes Ltd and 20 years in the making. This showy selection is the largest and longest flowering of armerias, exhibiting salmon-pink, globe-shaped flowers for seven to eight months beginning in early spring. It has good disease-resistance and is pest-free. It's a good plant for our times, taking the genus from its status as spring-flowering alpine to mainstream performer across all parts of the UK.

Salvia PINK AMISTAD ('Arggr17-011')

Bred by Rolando Uria, the well-known plantsman from Argentina and exhibited by Middleton Nurseries, Salvia PINK AMISTAD was selected in 2018 from seedlings bred the preceding year. It flowers from late spring to autumn, with deep pink flowers growing to 1m tall on upright stems and thriving in sun and part shade. It is an easy plant to grow and is hardy to -5 degrees C.

Before the opening of the 911±¬ÁÏ Chelsea Flower Show (24 â€“ 28 May 2022), an audience of Plant Committee and Trials Forum experts assessed a shortlist of plants being launched by Great Pavilion exhibitors at the show. Considering innovation, impact and appeal, the experts selected a single plant to be awarded 911±¬ÁÏ Plant of the Year – this and the second- and third-placed plants took pride of place at the show’s Plant of the Year display in the Great Pavilion (stand GP224), where all the finalists could be seen.
