About the garden

This garden celebrates the 130th anniversary of the founding of the Port Sunlight village. It is inspired by village founder William Lever, who built it for his workers in the nearby Lever Brothers Soap Factory. Lever recognised the importance of open spaces for health and wellbeing. The garden explores the history of Port Sunlight, showcasing formal gardens and informal open spaces. A formal herbaceous border with box hedging and plants including ox-eye daisies, lavender and salvias creates a vibrant landscape on one side. The informal area includes native woodland planting, trees and shrubs, such as silver birch and native ferns, to create depth and varying light levels.
