The Joy Club Garden aims to raise awareness of the issues surrounding isolation and loneliness in later life.
With a geometric design and materials chosen giving a nod to the setting of the Festival, the garden begins with an area separated from the rest by steel screens, representing social isolation. An evergreen pine tree signifies wisdom and longevity. From here, the planting scheme gradually becomes more colourful, encouraging exploration. A short path leads to a bridge across a pond – a journey that represents reflection and highlights the challenges of reconnecting with others.
Across the bridge is a sociable and inclusive setting consisting of a table surrounded by uplifting mixed planting. A smaller pine tree, which has yet to reach maturity, represents the benefits to society as a whole that can come from nurturing multi-generational relationships.
The garden illustrates the importance of social connection, community and friendship in later life.
