Hurtigruten: The Relation-Ship Garden

Show Gardens

The garden highlights the long-standing relationship between Hurtigruten cruises and the dedicated Norwegian coastal farmers who have supplied their ships for 130 years. The space focuses specifically one of Hurtigruten’s fruit farmers based in the south west of Norway who has created a lakeside garden for his personal enjoyment after years of hard work on the family farm.

Inspired by the productive nature of his land, edible plants such as Angelica gigas, rhubarb and wild strawberry can be seen planted amongst an array of ornamental plants such as Astilbe and yellow Hemerocallis, and an exciting selection of trees. The unusual flowering shrub Calycanthus â€˜Aphrodite’ forms a centrepiece to the garden, planted at the water’s edge. In lush ornamental planting at the rear, Agastache â€˜Blue Fortune’ and Sanguisorba are combined with the dark foliage of Actaea simplex â€˜B°ù³Ü²Ô±ð³Ù³Ù±ð’.

A reclaimed timber boardwalk, designed with modern Scandinavia in mind, dissects the space between planting and water. A terrace constructed of reclaimed granite setts offers the best seat in the house for a view over the lake and various pathways allow for adventurous movement around the garden.
